Blog-Style Announcements Service: Overview

This application service enables an organization to centrally manage and distribute announcements from across their organization. It provides a blog-style display with the ability to view announcements by date, by source, and by archive date. It also supports the ability for “persistent” corporate bulletins.

The announcement service can be accessed via a single link placed anywhere in the system. The basic service is comprised of a single site containing the service and the main corporate announcement list. This is used to manage the corporate bulletins and the main announcements. Additional announcements sources can be added to the service, so that this one service can mash-up and provide a single view of announcements from across the SharePoint environment.

A few of the things that you can do with this service are:

  • Serve up announcements and bulletins in the blog-style display
  • Centrally manage the distribution of announcements from many locations
  • Customize the basic UI for the name of the service and what access users have to navigate to announcements items, lists, and sites
  • Create various types of publishing workstreams to control the approval and flow of announcements that are distributed by the service
  • Extensively customize the user interface of the service using CSS and XSLT.
